Quando começou a tocar/ fazer música? Quando eu tinha mais ou menos 8 anos, eu sempre brincava com o órgão de meu avô, que ele tinha no porão. Com 10 anos, na 5a serie, aprendi a tocar trompete, que foi o meu primeiro instrumento. Mais tarde, com 15 anos, eu aprendi a tocar baixo sozinho.

O que ele faz?

É baixista da banda base do Hanson. Está lá em todos os show, vocês já devem ter visto!

Entrevista

1 – Tell us about your musical influences.

I spent most of my earlier days of musical career studying trumpet in concert bands/jazz bands/ as well as the marching band. Until my 10th grade of High school I was barely aware that the bass guitar existed. I listened to a lot of the bass virtuosos such as Stanly Clarke, Jaco Pastorious, Marcus Miller, and Pino Palledino. My first real experience playing in a band was in Church. Playing in the church helped me to progress very quickly and really developed my ear. Believe it or not I would sit in front of the TV and play along with tv themes, commercials, music videos, as we as video games. I also have some hometown heroes on the bass such as Mario Turner, Corey Baker, Adam Johnson, and Morgan Turner who are strong influences in my playing. Bass was one of those things that came into my life unexpectedly as a Christmas present from my Dad, but was very natural to me.

1- Conte-nos sobre suas influencias musicais.

Passei a maior parte do tempo, no início de minha carreira musical, estudando trompete em orquestras/ bandas de jazz/ bandas de marcha. Até a 2a serie do 2o Grau, eu mal sabia que o baixo existia. Ouvi bastante os trabalhos de grandes nomes do baixo como Stanly Clarke, Jaco Pastorious, Marcus Miller e Pino Palledino. Minha primeira experiência de verdade, tocando em uma banda foi na igreja. Tocar na igreja me ajudou a avançar rapidamente e desenvolveu bastante meu ouvido. Acredite ou não, eu sentava em frente à TV e tocava vinhetas dos canais, propagandas e musicas de videogames. Além disso, também tenho alguns heróis em minha cidade natal, como Mario Turner, Corey Baker, Adam Johnson e Morgan Turner, que são fortes influências em minha técnica. O baixo foi uma daquelas coisas que entrou em minha vida de surpresa, como um presente de natal de meu pai, mas foi algo bem natural para mim.

2 – Before you started playing with Hanson, were you listening to their music?

Honestly the only song that I was familiar with was MMMBOP lol. After getting a chance to listen and play their catalog of music I have such a great respect for their consitantly high level of songwriting.

2 – Antes de começar a tocar com o Hanson, você já ouvia a musica deles?

Sinceramente, a única musica que eu conhecia era MMMBOP (risos). Agora, depois de ter tido a chance de ouvir e tocar o catalogo de musicas deles, tenho um respeito enorme pelo continuo alto nível de composição da banda.

3 – Can you tell us something funny that happened to you since you started playing with the band?

Well I can say that there is a real fear of Birthdays. Last year @ Atlantic City I got about 8 cream pies smashed in my face on stage for the encore. This year I just took in among myself in Myrtle Beach to just go ahead and smash the cake in my own face. I just figured i could moderate where the cake wentlol

3 – Você poderia nos contar algo engraçado que aconteceu com você, depois que começou a tocar com a banda?

Bem, posso dizer que entre nos há um medo real de aniversários. No ano passado, em Atlantic City, eu levei mais ou menos 8 tortas na cara, no palco, durante o encore. Este ano eu decidi comigo mesmo, em Myrtle Beach, que iria simplesmente jogar o bolo em minha própria cara. Percebi que ao fazer isso, eu teria melhor controle sobre onde a torta acertaria (risos).

4 – How do you see the independent music scene these days? Tell us about it.

I see the independent music scene as an open canvas for artists to be themselves. I just think that when a major label has too much creative control over a situation you lose the heart and soul of the music. In an independent situation your more able to trust you instincs, make mistakes and learn from them. All major situations arent bad but if youve been in the business long enough you learn what to do and what not to do. In my opinion its always better to be your own boss.

4 – Como você vê a cena da música independente atualmente? Fale-nos a respeito.

Vejo a musica independente como uma tela aberta, em que os artistas podem ser eles mesmos. Eu penso que quando uma gravadora tem muito controle sobre o processo criativo, você perde o coração e a alma da música. Em sua situação, em que você é independente, você tem mais condições de confiar em seus instintos, cometer erros e aprender com eles. Nem todas as situações envolvendo uma gravadora são ruins, mas se você já esteve envolvido no mercado da musica por muito tempo, você aprende sobre o que fazer e o que não fazer. Minha opinião é que é sempre melhor ser seu próprio patrão.

5 – We know that you have been with Hanson for some time now, what changes has it caused in your life? Has it changed some of your ideals? Made you more mature?

This has definitely made me a more diverse player. Im introduced with different music everyday and I take it all in like a sponge. The great thing about music is that we never stop leaning and theres always room to grow. The bigger picture comes when you can use your gift to help other people. I support the efforts for the walk and it humbles me to be a part of something so great.

5 – Sabemos que você já está com o Hanson há um bom tempo, quais as mudanças que isso causou em sua vida? Alguns de seus ideais mudaram? Você acha que amadureceu mais?

Estar com eles, sem dúvida, me tornou um instrumentista mais diversificado. Tenho contato com diferentes estilos de música todos os dias e absorvo tudo isso, como se eu fosse uma esponja. O grande lance sobre musica é que nunca paramos de aprender e sempre há para onde crescer. A maior satisfação virá quando puder usar os seus talentos, para ajudar outras pessoas. Eu apoio os esforços em favor das caminhadas e fico emocionado por fazer parte de algo tão forte.

6 – Do you think you have influenced the band (considerable changes) in any way?

In a band everybody brings something to the table. I think each person brings a particular vibe to the situation. Being with the same unit for some time now creates a certain chemistry to the point where you musically know your fellow band mates. There is definitely an identity to my playing. At the end of the day my job is to play the music as authentically and passionately as possible. Like a fine wine were just going to get better with time.

6 – Você acha que influenciou a banda de alguma forma (mudanças consideráveis)?

Numa banda, todos têm algo a apresentar. Acredito que cada pessoa traz um vibe particular. Estar com a mesma banda após um tempo, cria eventualmente uma certa química, ao ponto de você conhecer seus colegas na banda muito bem musicalmente falando. Sem duvida, há uma identidade em minha forma de tocar. Afinal de contas, meu papel é tocar a musica o mais autentica e fervorosamente possível. Como um vinho refinado, que só melhora com o tempo.

7 – Do you think your perception on the tours is any different from the guys’ and the fans’? Could you tell us more about it?

Ive toured with other bands in the past and Hanson definitely has the most dedicated and passionate fans that Ive ever come across. I wake up every day thankful that Im able to do what I love to do and make a living doing it. Its important to have the right chemistry of people together. When you have a comradery far past the music it shows on the stage. I believe we have one of the most hard working crews in the business working with us and it makes it more enjoyable when you have the right players on the team.

7 – Você acha que a visão que você tem da turnê é diferente da visão dos Hanson e dos fãs? Fale-nos mais sobre isso.

Toquei com outras bandas no passado e sem duvida, Hanson tem os fãs mais dedicados e entusiasmados que já conheci. Todos os dias acordo feliz por poder fazer o que eu amo e fazer disso a minha profissão. É importante estabelecer a devida conexão interpessoal. Quando se tem uma parceria que vai além da musica, isso será refletido no palco. Acredito que temos uma das equipes mais esforçadas no mercado e tudo fica mais legal, quando os jogadores certos jogam no seu time.

8 – Do you have your own band? If not, do you plan on starting one band or more? What kind of music do you enjoy the most?

At the moment I dont have my own band. In my earlier days of playing I was in a few bands such as Rayzing Sons, Downrising, & Se7ven which made me into the payer that I am today. Putting together and keeping a band together and keeping a band together is a lot of work. Who knows I may put something together later on in life for self fulfillment. Im not in the music business because I want to be seen, Im in it because of the love of the craft. Its hard for me to single out what music I like to play the most. I would say that Rock and Roll is the most fun to perform because of the high energy level.

8 – Você tem sua própria banda? Se não, você tem planos de iniciar uma? Que tipo de música você mais gosta?

No momento não tenho minha própria banda. No inicio de minha carreira eu toquei em algumas bandas como Rayzing Sons, Downrising e Se7ven, o que me tornou o instrumentista que sou hoje. Montar uma banda e mantê-la funcionando exige muito trabalho. Quem sabe eu monte uma no futuro apenas para auto-realização. Não estou nesse ramo para ser visto, mas por que amo fazer isso. É difícil destacar qual tipo de musica gosto de tocar mais, mas eu diria que Rock and Roll é o mais divertido de se tocar, por causa do alto nível energético.

9 – What do you usually do when you are not with Hanson?

When Im at home I do a lot of writing, producing, and mixing. From the age of 15 I was always into computer music and new technology. Other than that I play bass at Kurt Franklins youth church in Inglewood called the Takeover. There I play with some very talented musicians that keep me focused and constantly learning.

9 – O que você normalmente faz, quando não está com o Hanson?

Quando estou em casa, escrevo muito, produzo e faço mixagens. Desde que eu tinha 15 anos, sempre gostei muito de música digital e de novas tecnologias. Além disso, toco baixo na Igreja de Kurt Franklins em Inglewood, chamada “The Takeover”. Lá eu toco com músicos muito talentosos, que me mantêm focado e em constante aprendizado.

10 – Since you are in close contact with all the Take the Walk thing, watching everything that happens, but maybe in a different way from that of Hanson’s and their fans’, how do you see that?

The Take the Walk campaign is more than just the music. Its an effort to do something positive in Africa and create change. When you have the ability to reach so many people I believe its an obligation to get people involved. Helping people in need is always a good thing especially when all it takes is coming out and saying Im going to walk this barefoot mile. Its a very small sacrifice for such a great reward.

10 – Visto que você tem contato com as caminhadas do Take the Walk, assistindo a tudo que acontece, porém de um jeito um pouco diferente do ponto de vista do Hanson e dos fãs, qual é o seu ponto de vista?

A campanha The Take the Walk é bem mais do que simplesmente música. É um esforço na tentativa de se fazer algo positivo na África e de se gerar mudanças. Quando você tem condições de alcançar tantas pessoas, acredito que é uma obrigação fazer com que elas se envolvam. Ajudar pessoas que precisam é sempre bom, principalmente quando tudo que se tem que fazer e vir e dizer a si mesmo, “vou caminhar esta milha descalço”. É um sacrifício bem mínimo, por uma recompensa tão grande.

11 – Are you familiar with the Brazilian music?

I actually love Brazilian music. The drum driven rhythms are so awesome and innovative. Its definitely not something that I listen to everyday but I know you could probably teach me a few things about it lol

11 – Você conhece bem a musica Brasileira?

Na verdade, eu amo a musica Brasileira. Os ritmos conduzidos por tambores sao tao maravilhosos e inovadores. Claro, não é algo que eu escuto todo dia, mas sei que você poderia me ensinar algumas coisas sobre a musica Brasileira (risos)

12 – Speaking of Brazil, do you think you will have the chance to see us anytime soon? We assume you would travel with the band on the next tour! So we hope!

You know only time will tell. I would love to come down to Brazil and experience the culture one on one. Lets just cross our fingers
